I still remember the first time I visited the cabin. It was autumn, and the leaves were just beginning to turn beautiful shades of orange and red. The weather was cooler than I was accustomed to, but there was something refreshing about the season and the adventure ahead.

We had just arrived at a small cabin that instantly felt like home. Outside, the air was crisp. Inside, a fire crackled in the fireplace, inviting us to settle in and stay awhile. Little did I know that this cabin would become the setting for years of family vacations, treasured traditions, and memories I would carry for a lifetime.

Each morning and evening welcomed us with the warmth of the fireplace. The cabin felt like something out of a country-living magazine, filled with the comforting aromas of home-cooked meals. There were the mouth-watering waffles with all of the trimmings: eggs, bacon, and sausage. And, I soon discovered something new, foil dinner packets. Wow! What a discovery, I thought. Why hadn’t I heard of this before?

I finally felt like I was a part of a family again, a feeling I had not felt since I was sixteen years old. I grew up in a loving home, but my parents' divorce changed the family life I had always known. For a long time, I carried the ache of what had been lost. Now, as a married woman, I was discovering something I had once feared I might never experience again: the comfort of belonging.

I couldn't rewrite my childhood, but I was beginning to build a new chapter in my life, and it felt amazing. I now had a family, a home, and a place where I could make memories of my own. Looking back, I can see how much that meant to me as a young girl who had once been so consumed by pain. The heartache ran so deep, I could barely imagine a tomorrow, let alone believe there was a future beyond the pain.

If I could sit beside my sixteen-year-old self today, I would tell her this: Your story is not over. The pain you feel now will not be your whole story. You cannot see what lies around the bend, but God has not abandoned you.

I realize now that God was with me even when I couldn't recognize His presence. He did not erase my past, but He carried me through it. He was with me in the chapter I wanted to escape, and He was with me in the chapter I could not yet imagine. Through it all, He taught me to believe in a future beyond the pain.

Although I would never have chosen that painful path, I can now see the Light of Christ in ways I might not have understood before. A new chapter had begun. I was no longer the heartbroken little girl I once was. Through it all, I had grown stronger in the Lord.

If I could hear God’s audible voice at sixteen, I would have wanted to hear Him say:

“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” – Hebrews 13:5

Yet, what I didn’t understand then, He has surely shown me. He has always been by my side.

“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” — Hebrews 13:5
“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” — Hebrews 13:5

Although my kids are grown now, I hold fast to the memories we've made over the years. I can still picture us sitting around the firepit outside the cabin on a warm summer evening, enjoying the foil dinner packets we'd prepared with meat, vegetables, and potatoes. Yum! And of course, no evening would be complete without s'mores, with melted chocolate smeared across our mouths. We laugh, tell jokes, and reminisce about days gone by. These are the moments that have become treasured memories, reminders of the family, love, and sense of belonging I never thought I’d ever experience again.

Perhaps you are in a difficult chapter of your own. You may not see the way forward, and you may wonder whether life can ever feel hopeful again. Remember today that you are loved, that your life has value, and that you do not have to walk alone.

There is hope. His name is Jesus.

What about you? What words do you need to hear from the Lord today?

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” – Revelation 21:4
