Using Your Love Language To Feel Close

Have you ever thought about how you can feel close to your spouse while they are traveling? Sometimes in marriage, our careers, school, or personal activities take us away from our spouse and family. There are things you can do to feel connected even with miles in between you and your loved ones.

There is a new Ford Edge commercial where the couple is talking on the phone. They are both exchanging their love sentiments towards each other, while the one is on a business trip. Although driving to your spouse’s conference may not be something you can do, there are things you can do to feel close while your loved one is traveling or when your careers pull you apart.

How can you use your "Love Language" (Dr. Gary Chapman) to feel close to your spouse? Here are some ideas:

Physical touch: A picture says a thousand words!

A photo of the two of you together certainly says a thousand words or sleeping in his shirt or on his side of the bed.

Quality Time: Something to look forward to!

A calendar that counts down the days until you meet again, plus a few fun date ideas for the things you plan to do together upon his return.

Words of Affirmation: How do I love thee, let me count the ways!

Cards, love notes, snail mail, text, skype, face time, e-mail, phone calls; the list of many possibilities just to express those three little words we all long to hear: “I love you!”

Acts of Service: Little things mean a lot!

Try journaling things you are doing to keep your loved one informed of the things you did while you were apart. Give the journal to them when you return home again.

Receiving Gifts: The gift of a promise!

Whether it’s a promise ring, flowers planted in the back yard, or a care package, these things remind you of the love that is given to you each day.

And, my own sixth love language, ha ha!

Community: Who is your support system?

Family, friends, church community, marriage mentors

This list in not exhaustive by any means, but I hope that if your loved one is traveling it will encourage you to feel close while he or she is away.

  • What’s your Love Language?

  • How do you stay connected while your spouse is away?

  • Who is your support system?

I have loved you with an everlasting love! Jeremiah 31:3
